Marketplace, freecycle, neighbours
Previous shelves, bed slats, panels
Solid grain, square edges where you need them, repairable surfaces.
Rot, deep cracks across the grain, unknown coatings, anything sticky.
Knock test, flex by hand, look for filler and old fixings.
Two diagonals on flat boards. Worst-case L × W × T.
If a failure would be load-bearing on a person, pick a safer cousin.
Old paint may contain lead. Ventilate. Wear PPE when sanding or cutting.
